This post covers the design and build of a rifle barrel vise that is mounted to a receiver post. This is another work bench accessory that can be plugged into my bench mounted receivers. As mentioned in previous posts, all my work benches have receiver mounts to accommodate a variety of attachments.
Normally a barrel vise is permanently bolted down on a bench, forever taking up space. With this approach, the vise can be quickly set up, and stowed away when not in use. As this is a high torque application, I attach it to my heaviest, 500+ lb bench.
I use the Brownells Barrel Vise.
Design
The design is trivial, just a 7″ x 7″ top plate welded to the receiver insert, with an end plate for aesthetics and some additional strength.
If additional strength is needed, I can add gussets underneath the top plate.
The mounting holes are 1/2″. The vise mount is oriented sideways (left/right) so that the barreled action clears the bench. The receiver insert is kept as short as possible to minimize torque on the receiver…just long enough to clear the top of the bench.
